Most of us know Mr. Coconut for their shakes... especially when the craze over their Original Coconut Shake peaked in 2021. But here’s the real surprise: did you know they also have a café spin-off?

I only discovered it recently while exploring Plantation Plaza, the first shopping mall in Tengah, Singapore’s newest BTO hub in the west. It feels like one of those malls with more to offer than meets the eye... if you even knew it existed in the first place (I didn’t, until three weeks ago).

That’s where I stumbled upon Three Little Coconut, Mr. Coconut’s café arm. While their first outlet opened in November 2023 at One Punggol, this was actually their third branch — tucked away in a small corner on Level 2 of Plantation Plaza. And since hidden finds are what we live for, our team headed over to see what coconut paradise looked like.

Before diving into coconut-land, we made an unplanned stop at Ron Sheng Fish Soup Premium: the mall spin-off of Yuhua Village Market’s famous hawker stall, which earned a Michelin Guide nod in 2024. One quick shout-out: steaming broth on a rainy morning, golden fried fish, punchy chilli sauce… I’m still salivating. Bowls start at $7.80, and honestly, it deserves a visit in its own right.

Anyhow, the Three Little Pigs of O'live & Write rubbed our full bellies and, after a short walk, eventually made it to our intended destination, Three Little Coconut.

What greeted us was an unassuming shopfront... and an instant whiff of coconut. SPOILER ALERT: That aroma was enough to reset our appetites because, despite being stuffed, we didn’t hold back and devoured everything.

Across the extensive menu were purely coconut-themed items. You name it, they've coconut-ified it. From traditional desserts to croissants and croffles, every item carried a coconut twist, which thrilled my coconut-loving self. But we were very demure and mindful, holding back and appropriately ordering three items to share amongst ourselves as a sweet treat.

ree

First up: the Gula Melaka Coconut Caffè Latte ($6.30)! Simple and understated, it wasn’t trying to be over-the-top. Upon the first sip, the subtle coconut notes lingered on the tongue before the coffee flavour came through, striking a nice balance without being overpowering. Unfortunately, the gula melaka element fell flat; though we spotted it sitting at the bottom of the cup, the taste was almost non-existent. It was a pity, because that warm, caramel-like touch could have elevated the drink much more.

Overall, it wasn’t anything groundbreaking or memorable, but it made for a pleasant post-lunch caffeine boost to fight off food coma. If anything, maybe you can opt for the regular Coconut Caffè Latte ($6.10) and save yourself 20 cents.

Next, we ordered the Pandan Coconut Croissant ($5.30), which was a visual shock because it was the most oddly narrow variant of a croissant we had ever seen (haha). But don't judge a pastry by its cover, because this one turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Questionable presentation aside, once sliced, warm, green, custardy Pandan Coconut cream oozes out generously. It might sound a bit messy, but trust the collective hums of approval at our table. It was seriously lip-smacking!

The fragrant kaya-like cream was packed inside (and I mean packed). It leans more towards the sweeter side, which might not be everyone's tea, but it was right up my alley as it paired harmoniously with the savoury croissant. If I had to nitpick, it would be that the croissant itself was slightly soggy, which made the slicing trickier than it should have been.

And finally, the star of the show: Uji Matcha Sago ($6.80)! There are so many brands jumping on the matcha bandwagon these days, but how many have done it perfectly well? Add Three Little Coconut to the list!

Now, before we dive deeper into what looks suspiciously like a Shrek swamp, here's what makes up this stunner: Uji Matcha sauce, drowning over copious amounts of sago, coconut jelly and coconut-flavoured snowy ice, crowned with a hefty scoop of coconut ice cream.

At first bite, we were hit with a pang of straight Earth. It was intensely earthy but in that premium matcha way, with none of the dreaded fishiness. The quality is evident in how vivid green the Uji Matcha sauce was. It was a very rich and deep flavour that non-matcha fans might be adverse to since it lacked the sweetness. So initially, this wasn't our top pick.

But then came the game-changer: the large dollop of coconut ice cream and coconut-flavoured snowy ice hidden beneath generous layers of sago and coconut jelly. That creamy, milky sweetness rounded out the bitterness of the matcha to make for a perfect, layered bite.

Rookie mistake: Don't just skim the top layers like we did at first; dig deep, because that sweet coconut base is the missing puzzle piece!

Discovering the snowy ice layer was an eye-opening experience because it also unlocked a divine interplay of textures: creamy matcha, bouncy sago, soft jelly, crunchy ice crystals, and a subtle flaky bite throughout. The more we ate it, the more we liked it. And by the end, the bowl was scraped spotless.

Okay, coconut this, coconut that. What about the space itself?

The café is styled like a traditional Singaporean eatery, with round wooden stools and small square tables. There were also traditional tile patterns running along the walls and counters, giving it a nostalgic flair. Surprisingly though, it wasn't adorned with coconut-related décor, which loses it some points on uniqueness.

That aside, the atmosphere was rather chill because there was no other customer aside from us, which felt surreal given how much this place deserves a bigger crowd.

Bonus: If you're into it, you can even watch the construction of Tengah MRT Station right in front of you while you enjoy your coconut fix.

So if you're a coconut lover like me, Three Little Coconut is the ultimate one-stop shop — the perfect hideaway to quench your thirst on a scorching day or to wind down with dessert after a meal. While it's not the cheapest, the quality more than makes up for it. It didn't disappoint me at all, and if anything, only made me a bigger Mr. Coconut fan.

It's genuinely so good that I would like everyone to visit and try it out yourselves! I even believe that it has the power to win over the hearts of coconut sceptics out there...

Petition idea: Make this a bigger thing so they will open more outlets and bring a slice of coconut paradise closer to all of us!
