Kafe Utu is truly a unique find... one that has already made waves (over a thousand reviews on Google!). Yet somehow, we hadn’t made it there until now. Needless to say, we were excited to finally check it out for lunch!
From the moment we stepped inside, we knew this was more than just a restaurant. Greeted by bold African portraits, rich wooden textures, and an industrial-chic vibe, we felt transported. But this isn’t a place that leans on tired clichés... no safari prints, no overwhelming tribal motifs. If you’re expecting bongo drums and a themed aesthetic, think again (and honestly, shame on us for even assuming). Kafe Utu defies expectations in the best way possible ^.^
Let’s explore their menu together. We were both drawn to the unique Utu Specials, a collection of non-alcoholic drinks. I tried the Cacao Kali, a dark chocolate drink with a smoky hint of paprika, topped with spiced, salted whipped cream. It was rich, complex, and quite an insane juxtaposition of flavours. My friend went for The Karanga... an indulgent blend of peanut mascarpone cream, espresso, and milk. Smooth, nutty, and totally luxurious :P
With our appetites thoroughly awakened, we dove into our mains. The buttermilk fried chicken arrived golden and crisp, but while it was perfectly cooked, it didn’t quite blow us away... though the spicy dip gave it an extra punch. What did impress us? The Ugandan Rolex: a hearty chapati wrap stuffed with minced lamb, kachumbari, smoked harissa sauce, and egg. Bold, flavourful, and deeply satisfying.
After lunch, we eagerly explored all three levels of Kafe Utu, having heard so many great things. We were blown away by the incredible attention to detail in every corner. Each level offers its own unique yet cohesive experience:
Ground Floor: Lively and warm, with handcrafted wood, bold African art, and rich, flavorful dishes. Plenty to take in.
Second Floor: Cosy lounge vibes! Plush leather seats, deep colours, and a bar at the other side near the outdoor space mixing up African-inspired cocktails. The terrace overlooks Tanjong Pagar.
Third Floor: A rooftop hideaway with a mix of African influences with more bold colours! Sunlight from the roof window is lovely, and it feels just right for a quiet moment or a small gathering!
Beyond its striking interiors, Kafe Utu’s menu celebrates Africa’s rich culinary diversity. From rich West African stews to bold Ethiopian coffee, each dish feels like a story. It’s a seriously fun and unique spot to discover.
For those ready to explore bold, exciting flavours, this spot is a fun, curious one. Whether you’re diving into a hearty stew, sipping on a specialty drink, or just soaking in the vibe, Kafe Utu offers a rare taste of African culture. We’ll be back... wallet permitting. It is a fine-dining experience, after all!
