Error 404 Cafe: Chef Pang Kok Keong’s Unexpected Return to Sweets at Capitol Singapore

With a name like Error 404 cafe, it's bound to turn heads.
I first glimpsed it along my work route – and immediately spotted the unmistakable Error 404 dinosaur.

Naturally, it was one of the first questions I asked Chef Pang Kok Keong, the mind behind both the design concept and the food.
He laughed and said it’s the most popular question he gets. No one is surprised.
"I wanted a space that is intentionally wrong," he cheekily explains. "So, instead of serving Chinese food and desserts in an expectedly Chinese environment, I thought of doing something weirdly different – thus the "error". I love surprises and unexpected elements in design."
I like a good off-the-beaten-track discovery. Unique cafes with personality are always worth exploring.

From the outside, you don’t see much. A semi-wall covers up what lies inside. But when you step in, there’s a tree growing right in the middle, surrounded by opulent seating.

It’s the strangest feeling — it looks small from the entrance, but inside it suddenly feels huge. I loved that contrast.
“I designed the space and sourced everything we put in the store,” Chef Pang tells me. “I probably drove my contractor crazy in the process.”
It was lunch time when I visited, so I went for the 404 Chicken Rice ($12.80) and a Duck Shit Single Origin Oolong ($5.80).
The 404 Chicken Rice comes with tender poached chicken over Hokkaido rice, topped with a silky chawanmushi and served with pickles and miso soup on the side. Comforting and simple, but with that little unexpected twist.
It was giving a bit of that Muji Bento meal vibe.
The Duck Shit Single Origin Oolong, despite the cheeky name, is actually a fragrant phoenix mountain oolong with a light, floral aroma.
It was my first time trying it, and I liked it a lot — almost on par with my love for Da Hong Pao from Chagee.

The brains and hands behind Antoinette, Chef Pang Kok Keong is a well-rounded chef who moves comfortably between food, desserts, and drinks. His experience and résumé are colourful, and we love that about him. Yet despite the long list of credentials, he remains completely down to earth, which makes him easy and lovely to talk to.

Error 404 also marks something of a return for Chef Pang Kok Keong. After years spent building Antoinette and working across different concepts, this space feels like him coming back to what first drew him into the kitchen... sweets.
As he puts it:
“I’ve lived and breathed sweets all my life, ever since I was thrown into the pastry kitchen as an intern during my SHATEC days. Sweets bring comfort to people, and I promised Antoinette fans that one day I’d be back making them again.”
We didn’t get to the desserts this time – which simply means we’ll have to come back.
