Cafe Gyoen brings a taste of Japan to Serangoon, offering authentic all-day teishoku breakfast sets in a space that feels more like a slice of Tokyo in Singapore. The cafe will be relocating after end May 2025, so now’s the time to visit before it moves :'(
Located in the Serangoon area, Cafe Gyoen has crafted a space that's both distinctly Japanese and wonderfully cosy. While the toilet area has a playful, themed setup, the rest of the cafe leans into minimalist Muji and airport lounge vibes. There's a comfortable rhythm to Cafe Gyoen... communal tables filled with students, warm lights casting a glow over notebooks and plates, and the quiet sense that no one’s in a rush to leave ^.^
A unique highlight: they've built a corner styled like a JR Line train station: perfect for a quick Instagram shot without feeling too over-the-top.
We sampled the Signature Hokkaido Pork Teishoku ($25), the Cold Tofu Soba ($16.90), and the Aburi Mentaiko Fries ($13). Each dish was beautifully plated, with clear attention to detail. The fries turned out to be a surprise favourite!! We found ourselves unable to stop nibbling on them (more so than our mains hehe). The tofu soba, a vegetarian option, was far heartier than its name suggests, light yet satisfying. As for the Hokkaido pork teishoku set, it was delicious, and we loved the thoughtful "mini-elements" concept that made the meal feel almost like a curated tasting.
To drink, we tried the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte ($8) and the Matcha Latte with Milk ($7), both featuring rich, earthy matcha flavours without being overpowering. Yes, we like!

In our opinion, Cafe Gyoen strikes a healthy balance between theme and authenticity. With great food, an inviting space, and standout matcha drinks, it’s definitely worth visiting (only if you're around the area) before they move out.
